SKIN CANCER

What is skin cancer and types of skin cancer

Skin cancer refers to the abnormal growth of skin cells that can develop on any part of the body. The most common cause of skin cancer is exposure to the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This can cause mutations in the DNA of skin cells, leading to uncontrolled growth and the formation of tumors. Other factors that can increase the risk of skin cancer include a family history of the disease, a weakened immune system, and exposure to artificial sources of UV radiation, such as tanning beds.Fortunately, if skin cancer is caught early, it is highly treatable.

TYPES OF SKIN CANCER

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most prevalent type of skin cancer that often occurs in individuals with fair skin, but it can also affect people with skin of color. It typically presents as a flesh-colored round growth, pearl-like bump, or a pinkish patch of skin. The primary cause of BCC is years of frequent sun exposure or indoor tanning. Although BCCs are most commonly found on the head, neck, and arms, they can also form on any part of the body, including the chest, abdomen, and legs. It is crucial to diagnose and treat BCC at an early stage, as it can grow deep and cause damage and disfigurement by penetrating the nerves and bones.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)

SKIN CANCER

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a type of skin cancer that is the second most common after basal cell carcinoma. People with fair skin are at a higher risk of developing SCC, but it can also occur in people with darker skin. SCC usually appears as a red, firm bump, a scaly patch, or a sore that heals and reopens. This type of cancer usually develops on areas of the skin that are exposed to the sun, such as the face, neck, arms, chest, and back. If left untreated, SCC can grow deep into the skin, causing damage and disfigurement. However, early diagnosis and treatment can prevent the cancer from spreading to other areas of the body and causing more severe problems.

SKIN CANCER

Melanoma is often considered the most dangerous type of skin cancer due to its potential to spread to other parts of the body. It can arise within an existing mole or suddenly appear as a new, irregularly shaped spot on the skin that looks different from the surrounding area. Early detection and treatment are critical in preventing the cancer from metastasizing, or spreading to other organs. To aid in early detection, it is important to know the ABCDE warning signs of melanoma, which include asymmetry, irregular borders, uneven color, diameter larger than a pencil eraser, and evolving size, shape, or color.
